Mercurial finally enters the winner’s enclosure
By : Our Correspondent ( Friday, March 27 , 2009 ) Having spent over a year without a win against his name, the five-year-old mare Mercurial finally entered the winner’s enclosure on the penultimate day of the winter racing season. The even-money favourite Aristos assumed his customary front-running role and was the first one to enter the home stretch. Suraj Narredu however failed to keep the bay colt on a straight course and shifted out allowing Harish ridden Mercurial a golden opportunity which she gleefully accepted. Once she got into the lead, the mare stretched out to stay put while Aristos ended second. Lionheart came out of nowhere to finish third.Stone of Destiny and Blink were two other horses who ended their drought of success. Warren Singh’s candidate Stone of Destiny came for some unexpected threat from Game Fighter who slipped into the lead at the turn. But Stone of Destiny was steered confidently by Harish who stamped his authority close home. Michael Eshwer schooled Blink for once didn’t hesitate to overtake leader Carabinieri in the straight and Suraj Narredu then drove him out for all his worth to stay ahead of India Shining. Milagro, who suffered interference from the winner at the start itself, ran on from the rear to finish third while Chilly Wind completed the frame. Nox, the S. Padmanabhan nurtured speedy son of Valid Concept, saw his chances dimmed in the betting ring as debutant Shotgunn cornered more than a fair bit of support. But Nox who hit the front right the from word `go`, never gave any anxious moments neither to the rider nor to his supporters and won in comfort without having to be extended. Real Magic showed some intent in the straight but the winner proved too good. Shotgunn failed to live upto the expectations and ended up a poor third. David Allan had to show his riding prowess astride favourite Awesome Beauty, who appeared to be in a hopeless situation at the turn when Panchakshari had nearly accomplished a start-to-finish mission. The mare started to devour much ground when alerted to the task and came up with a brilliant turn of foot to overhaul the tiring Panchakshari nearer the post. The lower division of the juvenile event was won in similar fashion by the lesser fancied Prasanna Kumar trained Spark of Solitaire at the expense of favourite Appolonaire and Trillion Win. The Juniper progeny was ably ridden by S. John. A brilliant piece of strong handling by S. A. De Souza enabled Darius Byramji trained Raptor Force to snatch the verdict from The Last Samurai virtually in the last stride. The latter had taken charge from Sunny Colours in the straight and seemed to be in control of the race till Raptor Force started galloping. One, the favourite, failed to accelerate and finished third ahead of the tired Sunny Colours. Awesome Fighter shocked punters in the opening event when he completed an encore in the hands of rider R. Ravi. The Mohammed Abbas trainee led the field all the way home and held on from the favourite comfortably. The last race also saw Chilli Chocolate giving some shock treatment to the on-money favourite Sheza Star, whose runaway bid came to grinding halt when the Jaggy Dhariwal trained filly responded to rider Ashok Kumar’s call. Fly For Sure started to gallop only when it couldn’t have made any difference to the outcome of the race but saved place money for the punters. |
