Friday, 6 December 2002:
There's a new format this weekend in the US with a format based on the Breeders Cup but involving horses from 11 different states.
The races are for Juvenile fillies, juveniles (c&g), Sprint, Distaff, Turf and Classic with all races except obviously the Turf being on dirt.
The Juvenile fillies is interesting as there is a good crop of juvenile filles around - I'll be watchiing Midnight Cry, Souris and Youcan'ttakeme. In the c&g Posse, Hear no Evil and Cataliss may be worth following.
The Sprint has Day Trader up against My Cousin Matt and Deer Run.
The Distaff has attracted Take Charge Lady and she should, with Coastalot and Graceful Cat in a field of 6. The Turf has one of my favourite horses, Forbidden Apple (we will miss him in Hong Kong) who I think should do it from Devine Wind and possibly Quiet Ruler.
And the Classic maybe Continental Red from Big Number andPass Rush.
Racing takes place at Sam Houston Race Park which I don't know much about.
It's an interesting format however the fields aren't very big and one wonders if a format more like the Shergar Cup wouldn't have been a more interesting one - they could have had the West Coast v the Rest or the West Coast v the East Coast. The States involved are Texas, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida, Califo9rnia, Washington, Iowa and Indiana.
In an interesting twist to the Pick Six scandal, a California handicapper known as Jimmy the Hat is suing Autotote Systems for negligence. He and other bettors in California have taken out a class action saying they could have lost millions over the last decade because Autotote didn't have security systems in place to stop the system being hacked into.
