CHAMPION JOCKEY Kieren Fallon, whose previous attempt to win the World Super Jockeys Series resulted in a 10th spot last year, will be hoping for better luck in the competition at Hanshin this weekend.

Fallon, part of an eight-strong foreign team in the four-race event, rides Toyo Cesar (Golden Saddle Trophy) and Amphitryon (Golden Whip Trophy) on Saturday.

Toyo Cesar looks the best of his two rides. Similarly, Reward Faucon (Golden Boots Trophy) could prove the best of his Sunday mounts.

Fallon also teams up with Sky Cherry (Golden Spur Trophy) on day two.

Frenchman Olivier Peslier, with two wins in the competition in the last five years, will be trying to extend his successful record.

Completing the foreign contingent are Michael Kinane (Ireland) (second in 1990), Damien Oliver (Australia), Lance O'Sullivan (New Zealand), Jose Santos (United States), plus competition debutants, Andreas Suborics (Germany) and Eric Saint-Martin (Hong Kong).

Six local jockeys, including star rider Yutaka Take, the competition winner 10 years ago, take on the visitors.

Yoshitomi Shibata, victorious three years ago, is another past winner

SHINJI FUJITA partnered with 6th favorite Agnes Storm (colt 4-y-o) won the Golden Whip Trophy to finish day-one of the Series on top with 31 points. Jumping from gate 11, frontrunner Agnes Storm saved ground to take the lead with Y. TAKE's 2nd-pick Dantsu Shake following two lengths behind. The colt maintained its lead in the homestretch with strong speed, holding off the challenge of Y. TAKE's colt to claim the race with a head margin. Yu One Protect mounted by Y. SHIBATA, coming out from mid-pack, showed great leg in the stretch but was just short of reaching the leaders to finish 3rd, a head behind runner-up Dantsu Shake.

KIEREN FALLON riding Amphitryon (colt 3-y-o) said: "The colt broke slow but responded really well. He lost concentration in the stretch. Maybe he will run better with a blinker."

OLIVIER PESLIER on board Hakusan Devious (gelding 6-y-o) recalled the race: "There was a disadvantage and I wasn't able to control him well."

DAMIEN OLIVER on Agnes Planet (colt 3-y-o) commented: "I settled the colt around 4th to 5th place as planned but was unable to escape from the pack in the stretch."

JOSE SANTOS on Kinsho Tegara (horse 6-y-o) commented: "The pace was too slow for him. I was unable to settle him in good position."

ANDREAS SUBORICS with Toho Spark (USA; horse 7-y-o) said: "The horse was unwilling to run in the pack. He may be able to run better in the front."

TURNOVER FOR THE RACE ALONE: 1,171,121,400 YEN

Foreign jockeys swept the top three places of the Golden Saddle Trophy, the first leg of the World Super Jockeys Series, with JOSE SANTOS partnered with 11th-pick MAKOTO HOSHUN (filly 4-y-o) claiming the race to earn 20 points. The race started off with D. OLIVER's Sun Lahib Nisei taking the lead to set the pace with M. KINANE's Legacy Answer and L. O'SULLIVAN's Tom Parade following just off the pace. As the field spread wide in the homestretch, rallying for a lead, sixth favorite Love Forever ridden by E. SAINT-MARTIN came out from mid-pack to take the lead but was immediately overrun by J. SANTOS mounting Makoto Hoshun who showed an impressive charge from the outside to clear the wire with a neck margin. K. FALLON on 3rd-pick Toyo Caesar stayed in good position and contained well in the stretch to finish 3rd.

Comments by foreign jockeys:

JOSE SANTOS commented on his victory: "I rode him in the back as instructed. I was able to position him well in the stretch and he responded well to my urging. I'm very happy to win the first race of the Series."

ERIC SAINT-MARTIN on Love Forever (mare 5-y-o) said: "The mare ran really well, easily keeping up with the pace. Too bad she was pinned at the end, but she did her best."

KIEREN FALLON riding Toyo Caesar (USA; horse 6-y-o)said: "The horse drifted inside at the stretch, otherwise, we could have won the race."

OLIVIER PESLIER on board Mejiro Ervin (colt 3-y-o) recalled the race: "The pace was too fast for the colt. He showed good leg at the end but I think a longer distance will suit him better."

MICHAEL KINANE mounting Legacy Answer (horse 5-yo) explained: "I wanted to hold him back a little longer but had to go as the other horses were coming from behind."

ANDREAS SUBORICS with Taiki Magnum (IRE; horse 5-y-o) said: "I was instructed to position him in the front but was only able to follow the pack. The horse may improve with longer distance (1,800m -- 2,000m)."

DAMIEN OLIVER on Sun Lahib Nisei (IRE; horse 6-y-o) commented: "Running him in the front suited him well. 1,400-meter distance may suit him better."

LANCE O'SULLIVAN partnered with Tom Parade (colt 4-y-o) said: "The colt flattened at the end. The distance may have been too long for him.

Whyte finishes second in World Super Jockeys Series

6 December 2009

Hong Kong's champion jockey Douglas Whyte finished second for the second consecutive year in the World Super Jockeys Series held at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan today.

Racked up 15 points on Saturday, Whyte, making his sixth appearance in this JRA series, ran 9th on five-year-old horse T M Hiryu in the third leg, the Golden Boots Trophy (Turf, 2000m). This victory brings Whyte's total tally to 38 points, second in the final standing. Japanese jockey Norihiro Yokoyama crowned this year's champion with 47 points.

Three riders who will be competing in the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley Wednesday, namely Ryan Moore of Great Britain, Christophe Lemaire of France and Yasunari Iwata of Japan, finished the two-day series in 3rd, 7th and 10th place.

Whyte also finished second in this JRA series last year, trailing to eventual champion Ioritz Mendizabal of France.
