Dunn Denied Dubai Ride
By Chris Scholtz
Monday, 18 March 2002: The Hong Kong Jockey Club has denied Australian jockey Dwayne Dunn of a career highlight by refusing to defer a suspension until after next Saturday’s Dubai World Cup meeting.
Dunn was booked to ride the David Hayes-trained Helene
Vitality in the $US2 million Sheema Classic but will now remain in Hong Kong after he failed to gain a deferment of a three-meeting careless riding suspension imposed on him at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Dunn applied for a deferment of the commencement of his suspension until after the Dubai World Cup meeting but the HKJC ruled that it would not be appropriate to vary the decision of the racing stewards.
Dunn pleaded guilty to the charge on Sunday and announced that he would not be appealing against the charge or the penalty.
However he submitted a written request for a deferment of the start of the suspension by one meeting to allow him to ride at the world’s richest race meeting.
The HKJC rejection means Dunn’s suspension will start after Wednesday night's meeting at Sha Tin and conclude on April 3.
Hayes has decided to replace Dunn with a top international jockey from the big list down to ride at Nad al Sheba on Saturday.
Hayes could not consider his stable number one Shane Dye as he is heading to Sydney this weekend for the Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill.
