Tug boats try to save stricken tanker
Salvage tugs are hauling a stricken oil tanker away from the Spain's north-western coast, as authorities battle to contain a 40 kilometre long oil slick threatening the region's pristine beaches.
Strong winds that have battered the area for several days have abated, allowing two tugs to attach tow lines to the Prestige, which is carrying 77,000 tonnes of fuel oil.
The ship is reported to be listing heavily, about five nautical miles from the shore.
A spill of an estimated 5,000 tonnes of oil is threatening marine life, but officials say they are now concentrating on preventing the tanker from breaking up, and causing a much bigger environmental disaster.
