The decision on whether European superstar Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) would race next year or go to stud at Coolmore Ireland will be made by owners Sir Alex Ferguson and John and Susan Magnier on Monday, trainer Aidan O’Brien indicated on Sunday.
The winner of a record seven consecutive Group 1 races before finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) had already been ruled out of an appearance in the Hong Kong Mile (HK-G1) at the International Races at Sha Tin on December 15.
In a departure from their previous pattern of retiring three-year-olds such as Giant’s Causeway and Galileo (Ire) after they have established themselves on the track, Coolmore will continue to race many of their top stars of 2002 next year, most notably High Chaparral (Ire), victor of the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), Epsom Derby (Eng-G1), and Irish Derby (Ire-G1).
Other horses campaigned by the Coolmore team that will continue to race next year include Group 1 winner and Espom Derby runner-up winner Hawk Wing, Galileo’s full brother Black Sam Bellamy, Group 1 winner and Irish Derby runner-up Sholokhov, and 2001 Breeders’ Cup Turf runner-up Milan (GB), Racing Post reports.

Winner of 10 of his 13 starts, The Rock won a total of £1,269,800 in prize money
