Thursday, 7 November 2002: The Group One VRC Oaks (2500m) is the feature race at Flemington this afternoon on Ladies’ Day which could provide an omen for race favourite Macedon Lady.
http://www.aapracingandsports.com.au/photogallery/medium/280202_22.jpg
The John Symons trained filly comes into the race with impeccable credentials with a second to AAMI Derby winner Helenus in the AAMI Vase (2040m) last start before that an impressive last stride win in the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
Macedon Lady has not come through the traditional lead up, the Wakeful Stakes, but her form stacks up very well indeed.
In the AAMI Vase she took on the best staying colt in the land in Helenus and pushed him all the way up the Moonee Valley straight only to fail by three quarters of a length.
That was her career best rating and certainly stamped her as a filly likely to have no trouble with the additional distance this afternoon.
Steven King who was aboard Helenus in his Vase and Derby wins will be reunited with Macedon Lady this afternoon.
She will need a little luck from where she is drawn but on ratings it will take a solid effort from her opponents to deny her victory.
The Graeme Rogerson trained Lashed has been set for this race all Spring and has excellent form to recommend her.
She has never been far away in her four runs in this preparation and came from 11th on the turn at Flemington last Saturday in the Wakeful Stakes (2000m) to just fail behind Hierogram.
Before that she was just over a length from Macedon Lady in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) after coming from 15th on the turn.
With Damien Oliver not riding, Jim Cassidy took over on Saturday and retains the mount today.
Lashed, even as a late two year old, showed she would be well suited by staying distances and the Oaks trip today should see that expectation realised.
The Wakeful Stakes winner always has an excellent record in the Oaks and this year the lightly raced Octagonal filly Hierogram scored a game, narrow win.
It was just her sixth race start and although she returned a career best rating, she comes into the Oaks as one of the lightest raced runners.
In four runs this preparation she has graduated from maiden company at Kembla Grange to the Wakeful Stakes. Now she goes to Group One level.
She will need to take another step to beat this field but she is certainly in the right stable.
Her stablemate Soprana has disappointed in two runs in Melbourne after a eye-catching effort in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick three runs back behind Platinum Scissors.
If she was to produce her Champion Stakes run she would be in the finish but I guess there is that doubt all the same.
The David Racovolis trained Fuji Dancer is another who cannot be ruled out of contention following three good runs in the Edward Manifold Stakes, Thousand Guineas and Wakeful Stakes.
A $40,000 yearling purchase, Fuji Dancer’s dam is a half-sister to 1982 Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double winner Gurner’s Lane and she is another who has showed staying potential by winning the Gibson Carmichael Stakes as a late two-year-old.
Fuji Dancer was one of eight fillies to finish within 1.2 lengths of Hierogram in the Wakeful Stakes which places a cloud over the merit of that form.
So in a race which looks pretty “thin”, Macedon Lady does seem to hold most of the “aces” as I believe her form lines look superior to those of her rivals.

McEvoy's threat to boycott Oaks

Leading Victorian trainer Tony McEvoy yesterday joined the growing chorus of unrest over the rock-hard Flemington track, declaring that his on-course stable resembled a "Royal Melbourne hospital" ward.
McEvoy sent 11 runners to Flemington for the cup meeting on Tuesday and all pulled up with sore and damaged legs, including Melbourne Cup runners Sandmason and Requiem, which finished last and second last respectively.
McEvoy has Milanova set to run in today's VRC Oaks at Flemington but the horseman has threatened to scratch the entire Lindsay Park team should the track come up hard.
"I am not interested in putting my horses through that again," McEvoy said.
"It might be the best time of the year to win a race but not at that cost."
He said Requiem and Sandmason both pulled up "very sore", while Hong Kong raider Helene Vitality, which is prepared by Lindsay Park heir David Hayes, had emerged from the race with a bone chip in a joint.
The trainer started two-year-olds Danzadash and Silverstein in the opening event on Tuesday and both youngsters returned to the stables with cracked cannon bones.
"As for the two-year-olds, well, we could get them back to the races but how are they going to be mentally?" McEvoy asked.
"They were both 100 per cent sound when they stepped onto the track and they both could hardly walk off it.
"That memory of the pain is going to stay with them for a long time.
"I am waiting on a report from the vet on two of the others, who have been x-rayed.
"I would personally invite curators to come down to the stable and have a look at the discomfort my horses are in and what [they are] putting the horses through."
Milanova was a $700,000 yearling purchase and has regal breeding, being by champion sire Danehill out of the Secretariat mare L'on Vite, and McEvoy wasn't about to "bust her".
Victoria Racing Club track manager Terry Watson said rain had been forecast before the cup meeting, which meant no water had been placed on the track.
"It's not too hard to say what should have happened in hindsight but I don't have a crystal ball," Watson said.
"We rely on the forecast, and it was for rain and thunderstorms.
"I would have preferred the track to be softer on Tuesday and I think most people would have, but if we had watered and the rain did come as was expected, it would mean that right in the middle of a drought, we would have a wet track."
A forecast of 31C today led to Watson dumping "as much irrigation as we could last night". "We will be doing the same tonight," he said.
Due to the drought, strict water restrictions are in place in Victoria, with the VRC having obtained special dispensation to water the track between the hours of 9pm and 3am to the equivalent of eight millimetres of rain.
Jockey Steven King, who is looking for his fourth group1 win of the Melbourne spring on Oaks favourite Macedon Lady, is also concerned about the track.
"It would be good to have a bit of give in the ground," King said.
Macedon Lady has drawn the outside of the 14-horse field, which is also a concern to King, although the 2500m is not.
"The trip is certainly no concern but the barrier is a bit awkward," he said. "We'll need a bit of luck from that barrier but she has had a faultless preparation."
Kerrin McEvoy, who finished third on Beekeeper in the Melbourne Cup, rides Fuji Dancer in the Oaks. The filly is coming off an unlucky sixth in last Saturday's Wakeful Stakes.
"She will be nice and handy and the extra distance should suit her," said McEvoy, who is a nephew of Tony's.
"The other day she got held up but hopefully she'll get a clear run and produce her best.
"She would probably be a bit better if we could get some rain but she has performed on top of the ground before.
"If we can get a trouble-free run, she should be hitting the line hard at the end."

Crown Oaks to Bulla Borghese
http://www.racenet.com.au/jo_adams/Trainers/quinton_FP.jpg
The Ron Quinton trained filly Bulla Borghese, ridden by Chris Munce, has taken out the Crown Oaks today at Flemington on Ladies Day, with Lashed a neck away in second and Antique third, favourite Macedon Lady was unplaced.
Sydney trainer Ron Quinton has combined with Chris Munce to win the $628,000 Group One Crown Oaks (2500m) with Bulla Borghese at Flemington this afternoon, with the filly dominating in the run home.
Darren Beadman went to the front on the John Hawkes trained Hierogram but the filly didn't appear to settle under him, and she was always going to have her work cut out staying the distance with that attitude.
Favorite Macedon Lady (Stephen King) was sweated up and fidgety behind the barrier and she never appeared a threat in the run.
Bulla Borghese won from the hard working Lashed (Jim Cassidy) with Antique (Dan Nikolic) third.
Quinton was nearly speechless, but not quite:
"That was a Neville Begg preparation. We've followed the same sort of preparation that Neville always did with his fillies and it worked.
I had great success with Neville when I was a jockey and he was the first to ring me this morning to wish me luck.
"Chris gave her a perfect run, he's a very good distance jockey, he can always get them to relax under him.
"This has to be the biggest thrill of my racing career. I had a few great moments as a jockey but this one tops them all.
"I doubt I'll ever get a bigger thrill."
Munce was delighted to win another Group One at Flemington:
"It was a nice genuine tempo, although I was a bit surprised that Hierogram went to the lead.
"I ended up in a good position one off the fence, back in fourth spot and when I let her down, she just went to the line strongly.
"The other day in the Wakeful Stakes (2000m), Ron said to ride her a bit more quietly to see if she would get the distance, so we did that and took the blinkers off.
"She went to the line as good as anything (finishing fourth) so we went into today's race with a lot of confidence.
"What a great thrill to win a Group One Oaks for a trainer such as Ronny Quinton.
"It was always going to be hard to pick up rides in Sydney when I first went there but Ronny put his faith in me and I'm glad I was able to do the job for him down here today."
Munce who has also won the Group One Melbourne Cup on Jezabeel in 1998 said:
