Quite a lot of interesting info here - must be sick of the Arabs stealing all the big prizes, so closing a couple of the big races to any foreign invaders, head in the sand!
Horse of the Year goes to Bocelli who if memory serves me correctly lost a big race due to an irregularity in urine sample - yes, correct, see below!
Bocelli, Singapore’s champion racehorse has been disqualified as the winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kranji last October after testing positive to tosalicylic acid. Bocelli’s trainer Paddy Busuttin was fined $2,000 by the Stewards who took his good record into account. Busuttin has the right of appeal. The placings in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup are now Saddle Up 1st, Smart Bet 2nd and Tapildo 3rd.
Gold Cup and Derby for local horses only
SINGAPORE, 13 Feb 2002
The S$1 million Singapore Gold Cup and the Singapore Derby, the latter sponsored by Emirates for the past few years, will be confined to local horses from this year. This is to ensure that local owners have a fair share of the prizemoney on offer, according to Singapore Turf Club chairman Koh Yong Guan.
Speaking the at Singapore Racing Awards night last Sunday, Koh also warned of major challenges ahead for racing.
Describing them as stiff but not insurmountable, Koh said the most significant is the declining turnover arising from the uncertain economic conditions.
Other challenges include rising costs, lack of skilled local manpower, encouraging future generations of horse owners and racegoers and further improving the image and quality of Singapore racing both locally and aboard.
Last year, the club had recorded $1.8 billion in totalisator turnover, down about $100 million from the previous year.
Koh said the club will be taking measures such as opening more off-course betting centres, introducing self vending betting kiosks and working closely with the authorities to explore other measures to combat illegal bookmaking.
More races will be run to provide more opportunities for owners to recover their costs. And one of them being confining the Singapore Gold Cup and Singapore Derby to local horses. Last year, Godolphin Stable’s KUTUB, a Group 1 winner, ran away with the Singapore Gold Cup.
Godolphin Stable also won the 2000 Singapore Derby with ALL THE WAY but local hero BOCELLI took the 2,000 event for four-year-old last year when the prizemoney totalled S$800,000.
Meanwhile, BOCELLI was voted 2001 Horse of the Year in Singapore.
The first horse to sweep all three legs of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge series, BOCELLI registered five consecutive victories in the first half of the season.
The Patrick Busuttin-trained galloper was also named Champion Four-Year-Old for the middle-distance category, finishing ahead of TAPILDO in the voting .
Also picking up handsome cheqyes give out by the Singapore Turf Club were were Malcolm Thwaites (top trainer in terms of winners), Laurie Laxon (top trainer by percentage), Saimee Jumaat (top jockey) and Terry Ong (top apprentice).
