SMART BET (outside) winning the Emirates Singapore Derby on July 14.
SMART BET, arguably Singapore’s best galloper since OUZO, resumed from let-up following his Emirates Singapore Derby triumph last July to win the S$350,000 Raffles Cup (Singapore Group 1) over 1,800m at Kranji tonight.
Ridden by a brilliant race by Grant Cooksley, the five-year-old bay Australian gelding by COSSACK WARRIOR out of QUIETER STILL (by ALMURTAJAZ) came from well off the pace to beat SKY FRONTIER (Benny Woodworth) by one length.
LEAD TO VICTORY (Din Azis) finished third and PALACE LINE (John Geroudis) fourth of 11 runners.
It was the 10th win in 25 starts for SMART BET who landed in Singapore unraced. Last year, he won the Chairman’s Trophy (1,800m) and the Kranji Mile (1,600m), the second occasion with Cooksley astride.
MRA jockey Tony Cavallo, resuming from injury a couple of weeks, scored his first win on his comeback when he steered to FIRETRUCK to victory in the Class 5, Div 2 - 1,800m (Race 5).
It was the first success in nine career starts for the four-year-old bay New Zealand gelding by GOLD BROSE out of KISS (by POMPEII COURT), a full-brother to Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner FIRE HOUSE who was unplaced in the Raffles Cup tonight.
PACIFIC CITY (3 b.am.g CRUSADER SWORD - KNOWN LOVA by KNOWN FACT) made it three wins in three starts when he outclassed his rivals in the Benchmark 78 - 1,200m sprint (Race 8).
MAKE NO MISTAKE (4 b.a.g HURRICANE SKY - MIETTE by SNIPPETS), having his first start since landing 14 months ago, made up for lost time when he easily won the Maiden - 1,200m sprint (Race 2). - turfonline
