THERE IS A DIFFERENT SORT of thoroughbred reeling going on these days in the more privileged quarters of Arlington Trackside. The new tempest began 10 days ago, when a veteran public selector did or did not assist an elite-level player in making selections for a whopper-level Pick Six at Santa Anita. The selector claims there was an understanding he would receive 10 percent of any winnings for his professional input.
The player, partnered in the wagering with a well-known area horse owner, nailed the big bet for a pre-takeout score of $330,322.60. The elite duo owned one of only two winning $2 tickets nationally on the Santa Anita Six. But when it came time for him to pay his private assistant--a post-tax cut of approximately $12,000--the elite player told the public selector there was no agreement on that particular day.
THE PUBLIC SELECTOR, thoroughly devoid of recourse, denies any ongoing seething, but he claims he has been enlightened about the fleeting nature of Form-side friendships.
Said the big picker: ''I am neither a schnorer [an entitlist] nor a chazzar [a pig], but I know what's right and what was agreed to. Only a few days before, this guy gave me $30, 10 percent of $300, when he hit a small consolation Pick Six. I thought, 'What the heck. It's a week's worth of Forms. Take the money.' But now the man has unleashed a very negative strain of racetrack karma upon himself and his selections.''
