JRA to launch "Japan Autumn International"
The Japan Racing Association (JRA) will launch the "Japan Autumn International (JAI)" - a one-month long festival of top-class international Grade 1 races in fall 2008.
The JAI will be initiated in an effort to further upgrade the overall level of contending horses and races in Japan. Also, being held between the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Breeder’s Cup Day in October and the Hong Kong International Races in December, the JAI will aim to attract the best overseas horses to run in Japan. By preparing four consecutive Grade 1 races of different conditions (requirements), overseas horses in the same stable can travel together and yet run in separate races, providing more options for overseas connections.

Similar to other international carnivals around the world, the JAI will include consecutive weeks of top-tier, Grade 1 races, beginning with the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (F&M, 2,200 meters, turf) on Nov. 16 at Kyoto Racecourse. After the Mile Championship (1,600 meters, turf) on Nov. 23 at Kyoto and the Japan Cup (2,400 meters, turf) on Nov. 30 at Tokyo Racecourse, the series will culminate with the Japan Cup Dirt and the World Super Jockeys Series on Dec. 6 to 7 at Hanshin Racecourse.
Along with the introduction of the JAI, there will be changes made within the racing calendar. The Japan Cup Dirt, which had been held a day before the Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse since its inception in 2000 (other than 2002), will move to Hanshin Racecourse and will be conducted as the feature race one week after the Japan Cup. The race will be run over a shorter distance, from 2100 meters to 1800 meters, and is truly expected to be the stage to attract the best of the dirt horses, not only in Japan but worldwide.
The JAI, which consists of the best quality racing of JRA's autumn season, is eagerly awaited to be one of the major international events in the global racing calendar.
