While Australasian breeding aficionados had likely anticipated that a well bred Six times Group I winner would probably succeed in the breeding barn few would have anticipated the speed with which Glenmorgan’s Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Chief Bearhart would have achieved it.
With his oldest crop only just two, in Japan, and with limited two year old racing Chief Bearhart has made the perfect start with two runners to the track for two victories. The racetrack impact of Chief Bearhart’s first crop was reflected in the recent Hokkaido sale last week where excellent
prices were achieved for the one Chief Bearhart weanling and four yearlings that went through the ring.
As Executive Vice-President of the Japanese Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association Dr Atsushi Ogawa commented; “With the Japanese economy still weak, and with a sales clearance rate of only 20% for foals and 57% for yearlings it is truly a great accomplishment that all his progeny were sold and sold well.”
Dr Ogawa went on to add that “Toho Asuka (a filly by Chief Bearhart out of a General Assembly mare) won a 1200m race at Hanshin Racecourse on Saturday June 29th by 6 lengths in a most impressive fashion and looks likely to be Chief Bearhart’s first graded winner.”
Chief Bearhart by Chief's Crown out of Canadian Broodmare of the year Amelia Bearhart is the highest earning stallion at US$3.381,557 to ever stand in NZ. Chief's Crown won 8 Group I races himself and was USA and Canadian Horse of The Year at 3, 4 and 5 and gives every indication of being a breed shaper through the deeds of stallion sons such as Grand Lodge, Erhaab, Azzaam and Istidaad. Amelia Bearhart in addition to producing Chief Bearhart also produced Group One winning racehorse and leading USA first crop sire Explosive Red.
As stallion master Brett Jenkins commented: “When we leased Chief Bearhart we knew he was a Champion
racehorse - he had won twelve times, including six group I's, and the Breeders Cup Turf in record time racing from two to five, but like any new stallion there is always a doubt until his progeny hits the tracks.
Obviously we are delighted his very first runners in Japan have created such a stir among breeders. With the progeny of other Chief’s Crown stallions going so well in Australasia and the fact Chief Bearhart has proved he can leave classy racehorses it is very exciting for Glenmorgan and our clients.”
Chief Bearhart was recently nominated for the Canadian Hall of Fame to add to his seven Champion Awards he received for his racetrack performances.
The stallion shuttled to Glenmorgan Farm for his first Southern Hemisphere season in 2001 and in conjunction with the Japanese BBA Chief Bearhart will be returning to Glenmorgan in 2002 where he will stand at NZ$18,000 plus GST. - thoroughbrednews
