View Full Version : Help -- Japan Cup meetings

Ant
13-11-2002, 19:40
There is a good chance I will be in Japan next weekend and if time permits I will see if I can attend the Japan Cup Dirt and Japan Cup meetings in Nakayama racecourse. Can anyone here help me:
1) Do I need to secure tickets in advance? I know for Derby and Arima Kinen tickets are required but not for Japan Cup usually; yet given this year it is moved to Nakayama I am wondering if this is needed. If so, is there anything I can do in advance since I will likely arrive in Tokyo Friday noon.
2) Does JRA have special arrangement for visitors from overseas (eg. reserved seats etc.), otherwise I may need to go to racecourse very very early, am I right?
Thanks for helping.

Scarper,
The final fields for both races wont be announced until next Thursday 21st but I can tell you that Agnes Flight and Air Shakur are out but if Fusaichi Run Heart decides to run in the JCD Air Shakur will run in the Cup, so whatever happens there will be 9 Japanese horses and 7 invited in the Cup with 11 or 12 Japanese horses and 4 invited in the Dirt.

Ima,
I never know what the deal is because I never need tickets.
Get Ant to call the JRA International section and ask for Glenn Boothe or Mr. Akitani and explain his situation and maybe they can help.
Phone 81 3 3591 5251 and receptionist will be Japanese with some English ability.
Ask for GB or Mr. A if Glenn is out.
Hope this helps.

Symboli Kris looks like the standout of the japanese runners - beat a good feild at the end of last month including Narita Top road who ran second. The rest dont look that great this year???
What happend to Jungle Pocket? hasnt raced since april?? And who knows what work he might have been doing.

Yes, he is the one in my blackbook too. A lovely type of horse and a good win a couple of weeks ago.

Very intersting that they have taken Red Sun ( HK) over for the Japan Cup Dirt...could he have any hope at all? I would rate his chances at next to nothing. :p

Red Sun - he ran a 124 (HK ratings) end of last season and is capable of 115 im sure. may need to run 130-140 to win so it would be the best run of his life if he did.
BUT THE BIG ??? IS CAN HE HANDLE THE DIRT - NEVER RACED ON IT BEFORE.

Jungle Pocket is now owned by Shadai, actually the have cntrollong interest in the horse so will probably race in the Shadai colors. Horse suffered an injury and has taken a long time to recover.
Doubtfull he would be fit enough for this because I think they will pretty quick.
I share your thoughts about Symboli Kris S and the regular jockey has a long association with owner of Magnaten so Olivier Peslier will be on Symboli. Could be back to back cups for OP.
Watch out for Sunrise Pegasus. I have not been a big fan as I think the horse races too greenly but the 2200m may just suit his late finish even thought the straight is only 310m
Narita Top Road must be a chance as well but I'll wait til next week before deciding and ven on race day may change my mind depending on how they parade.

The 2000m race 11 in Nakayama on 27 oct looks like it was the big lead up race with so many of the likely japanese runners in that same race. Any that were not trying in that race?

Yes, Symboli Kris's is a very nice horse. He has a lot of potential as he is only three years old. As you can imagine, it is difficult enough for a 3 year old taking on Domestic Group 1 runners, but he is up against them AND International Group 1 winners in the Japan Cup.
I relate Symboli Kris's to our late Billion Win for his fighting qualities. Only a very few horses can find as much as Billion Win when headed and Symboli Kris's is one of them. Always keep them safe. My eye will only be on him cum race day. Whatever he does he should give a run for your money.

Referring to my earlier post, I commented on Sunrise Pegasus because all along I thought he was being set for the JC. Sorry not even in the final acceptances.
In that case I go SKS and Narita Top Road with maybe Golan 3rd if he has come up alright since Arlington.

Scarper
14-11-2002, 06:54
yeah - billion win was a nice horse. if i remember rightly he used to be hobbes' favorite a few years back (i think the 6 wins in a row helped!) but he never really achieved the speed ratings that the very best horses do (he counldnt really get past 120 = HK ratings where 140-150 would be the top efforts we see on international days).

How do you calculate the 157%?

Scarper
14-11-2002, 22:28
could have made a mistake as just did it mentally - but if you mean method, sum of 1/digital price as usual. 5/2 = 3.5 as need to include 1 stake.
the martket will have to become more competive as the race approaches but little surprise that betfair is stealing the show when markets around 100-102% are the norm.

Jungle Pocket, trained in Japan by Sakae Watanabe, will be looking to claim his second successive Japan Cup, the penultimate leg of the 2002 World Series, at Nakayama Racecourse on November 24th.
http://www.racingseries.com/newspix/jpocket.jpg
The four-year-old son of Tony Bin has only run twice this season, finishing second in both the Hanshin Daishoten and the Tenno Sho-Spring. Plans for him to run in the Takarazuka Kinen and the British leg of the World Series - the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes had to be abandoned after he suffered a leg injury.
Jungle Pocket recuperated on a farm in Hokkaido for the summer and returned to work on September 27th, he looks to have regained his old form and has been reportedly working well.
Among the other Japanese entries is Narita Top Road, winner of the 1999 Japanese St Leger. This season the six-year-old, trained by Yoshio Oki, has had three wins in Group Two races and a third place in the Tenno Sho-Spring and a second in the Tenno Sho-Autumn, where he came from off the pace in the home stretch.
The son of Soccer Boy finished third to Jungle Pocket in last year's Japan Cup.
Winner of the Tenno Sho-Autumn was Symboli Kris S, a three-year-old son of Kris S trained by Kazuo Fujisawa. On his seasonal debut Symboli Kris S finished a length second to Tanino Gimlet in the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby).
Sunrise Pegasus, a four-year-old son of Sunday Silence, was third in the Tenno Sho-Autumn and is rated at 116. He has a reputation as a good finisher with a late kick over distances of 2000 to 2200 metres. Five-year-old Air Shakur was fourth in the Tenno Sho-Autumn, he had been off the racecourse for four months so he is expected to have come on from the run.
The favorite of the Tenno Sho-Autumn was T.M. Ocean and was regarded as the best 4-y-o filly in Japan; however; she finished a disappointing 13th.
The winner of the 2002 Japanese 2000 Guineas, No Reason, a three-year-old son of Brian's Time, is one of the most outstanding runners and is equal to Symboli Kris S. Bad luck has plagued him; he suffered a bone fracture during the Japanese Derby and his jockey fell coming out of the starting gate during the Japanese St Leger this autumn.
Eishin Preston is no stranger to the World Series and is currently on 12 points following his win in the Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong in April. Trained by Shuji Kitahashi, the son of Green Dancer is the only horse who has a chance of winning the World Series and denying World Series leader Grandera the honours.

Specialweek, do Hills know something about Jungle Pocket that we dont? Reports of working well wont do it for me - it a big call freshup over 2200 in a race like this.
Symboli Kris S 7/2
Jungle Pocket 9/2

Narita Top Road 7/1

SpecialWeek, Imaufo:
Thanks for helping. I got in touch with Mr. Glenn Boothe and his staff has been very helpful.
Just got news that Indigenous is scratched from Japan Cup because Ivan Allen is furious that the Japan agriculture department (whatever the official name of the dept is) confiscated the food intended for the horse during the trip.
Red Sun now the sole HK rep at the meeting, never ran on dirt in HK but was a G1 winner on dirt in Argentina.

Scarper, He won't be getting any of my money but he is the class horse of the field.
He does not run clockwise as well as left handed and of course has not had any prep runs.
I will be backing SKS and NTR

I agree that Jungle Pocket is the class horse of the feild - he would have been my fav had he put in a few lead up races to show the injury was not serious. As it is i cant see past NTR or SKS either. Shame about indigenous - he would have been my roughy (excellent horse who conistently runs ratings over 100 no matter what!! the best in HK easily in the last 10 years)
