New Types of Betting are Hot !
("Sankei Sports" article dated August 5, 2002)
One month after the nationwide launch....
Since the nationwide launch of new types of betting, "Exacta" continues to grow while "Trio" has faltered somewhat. Despite its huge payouts, could it be too complicated?
JRA's breathes a sigh of relief
August the 4th marked the end of the first Race Meeting (8 days) since "Exacta" and "Trio" went on sale around the country.
These new types of betting have won nearly half of the betting market, with a share of 45.7%.
Total sales also increased 4.7% over the same period last year. Even the JRA, troubled by a falling turnover, must be pleasantly surprised.
Downward slide halted by a 5% rise
The first race meetings since the nationwide launch of "Exacta" and "Trio" are now complete at Hakodate, Niigata and Kokura Racecourses( July 13th-August 4th).
Although sales at Hakodate fell slightly to $ 401 million (down 0.6% from last year), the turnover at Niigata rose by 2.6% to $ 755 million and that at Kokura by 12% to $ 607 million.
The total was $ 1.8 billion , a significant increase of 4.7% from last year (since this year's race meetings in Hokkaido started a week late, the total only includes days 3-8 of the Hakodate meeting and two days of the Sapporo meeting).
JRA sales for the first half-term, culminating with the Epsom Cup (JPN-G3) in June, were down by 5% from the same period last year.
But overall sales for the year show a decrease of only around 3%. That improvement must have been due to the new types of betting.
Exacta and Trio take 45% of all sales
While viewing is the share for each type of betting, "Trio" remains stable at 25.7%, "Exacta" at 20% and "Quinella" at 35.8%. Between them, these new types of betting have accounted for nearly half of all sales with a share of 45.7%.
In particular, "Exacta" which offers high payouts, accounted for 17.8% on the opening day. Its fans increased gradually thereafter, taking it through the 20% barrier for the first time, reaching 21.2% on the 5th day of sale.
Since the new types of betting will also be available via the PAT (Personal Access Terminal) System from August the 24th, a further shift towards them is anticipated.
In the 10th Race at Hakodate on August the 3rd, a "Trio" bet yielded a payout of $ 6,314 , easily outstripping the previous record of $ 4,870 (11th Race at the Fukushima Racecourse, June 23rd, Trio) to become the JRA's biggest ever payout.
This well illustrates the record-shattering potential of the new types of betting.
The average payout to 100 Yen ($ 0.83) (1st Meeting at Fukushima, 2nd Meetings at Hakodate, Niigata and Kokura) is at $ 177 for "Trio" and $84 for "Exacta" both of these bets are certain to be under the spotlight in future.
