Seven-time leading Japanese sire Sunday Silence still is being treated following three operations on his right foreleg, which has been infected for about two months with a virus that has caused painful swelling.
The 16-year-old son of Halo, who stands at Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido, began to show swelling in the leg during the middle of May. Since then, he has been treated with antibiotics and has had surgery to remove pus from the leg three times.
Winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness Stakes (G1), and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) during a season that earned him honors as Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old colt, Sunday Silence underwent his last surgery on July 18.
As the infection has continued, Sunday Silence reportedly has been lame in his right foreleg. No sign of complications, such as laminitis, has been detected to date, however.
Bred by Oak Cliff Thoroughbreds in Kentucky, Sunday Silence has changed breeding history in Japan. He has ranked as the leading sire since 1995 and his progeny have earned a total of $319,451,844 through Monday.
With nine crops of racing age, Sunday Silence has sired ten champions and 74 stakes winners, including Stay Gold, winner of the $2-million Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-G2) in 2001 over eventual American turf champion Fantastic Light. - thoroughbredtimes
