Betting is a competition. Most of the competitors are fairly sharp. When a particular factor or combination of factors generates unusually generous returns, it doesn't take long for the other bettors to catch on and milk it to death.

The best model has a finite life span; it lasts only until the competition catches on. By continually analyzing and evaluating past results (using multiple regression analysis and statistical processes standard in business), it is possible to predict trends and influences that are productive. In business, it is called "staying ahead of the curve." That is what we do.

Sounds like backfitting to meNope. It's called data modeling. No one cares what would have won. It is only relevant if it predicts what WILL win. Many statisticians and number crunchers never learn the difference.
