The information we're getting on his condition in America is rather sketchy... can someone fill me in on what's going on and the prospects for his recovery?

Continuing concerns over the health of champion Japanese stallion Sunday Silence precludes the son of Halo from serving any mares to southern hemisphere time this year.
Arrowfield Stud started the positive innovation for the Australian thoroughbred industry in 1998 when they sent a selection of high quality mares to be covered by the Shadai Farms superstar.
'We are looking to resume sending mares to Sunday Silence in 2003 depending on the recovery from his current injury. He is a world-class sire and gives the Australian Bloodstock industry a presence on the international stage,' said Arrowfield stallion nominations manager Byron Rogers.
It represents a further blow to sales companies, which will already be factoring in the impact of Coolmore Stud’s decision not to shuttle Danehill this season. Sunday Silence and Danehill dominated the stallion averages at the Easter Yearling Sale and were credited with attracting a strong bench of international buyers that underpinned the success of the sale. Sunday Silence averaged $820,000 for his five lots offered while Danehill’s customary large draft averaged $359,146 for the 41 yearlings sold.
The first Australian born foals of Sunday Silence began racing this season. They include the stakes winning filly Sunday Joy (Joie Denise), N.Z winner Sunday Whisper (Valsora) and the promising Lavishly (Lunaliona), second at her only race start.
Sunday Silence has six soon to turn yearlings on the ground in Australia. The three colts and three fillies include;
Brown filly x Don’t Stop Talking (Ahonoora) the dam of stakes winners Yammer (Bellotto and Blab (Flying Spur) and a half sister to Horse Of The Year Bounding Away (Biscay)
Bay or brown colt x Engraver (Miners Mark) whose dam is a stakes winning daughter of a full sister to Secretariat.
Bay filly x Felicitation (Danehill) fourth foal of an unraced half-sister to the grand racemare Emancipation. Dam has already produced the useful Hong Kong galloper Song For SzeSze (Unbridled’s Song)
Ch colt x Nance Chrissie (Bluebird), dam has already produced the high-class Queensland galloper Broc ‘n’ Roll (Brocco) and is an unraced half-sister to outstanding racemare November Rain.
Bay or brown colt x Phantom Creek (Mr. Prospector) dam is a half sister to champion juvenile Arazi (Blushing Groom) and Sussex Stakes (G1) winner Noverre (Rahy)
Bay filly x Sensation (GB) (Soviet Star). Dam won the Falmouth Stakes (G2) and Prix Sandringham (G3) and is a daughter of the champion racemare Outstandingly (Exclusive Native).

Things are looking bad for Silence. I've heard he can't put weight on his foreleg and the evening edition of one of the sports newspapers (albeit one of the more sensationalist ones) reports Sunday Silence in very bad condition and that laminitis has set in. I do believe Shadai is trying to keep things quiet or asking the media to. This does not look good.

I hope he makes it! I truly love this horse.

Hi, everyone,
I am new to your forum.
American fans of Sunday Silence (like myself) are truly worried about his health and can't get any information about him. Seems like there is a news blackout about his illness. Laminitis? No laminitis? Conflicting information.
Has anyone seen any recent news in the Asian press about him?
Anxiously waiting. Sunday, get better soon. I am praying for you. :(
Linda loo :)

The latest I have is that he is stable but they are not overly optimistic yet.
One good sign is that he has started his old habit of biting his strappers so in some way they feel that is encouraging.
This info was from 2 days ago.

"I haven't seen anything on S.S. recently (i.e., in the last couple of days). I just saw a comment from Shadai people a couple of days ago saying that the 3rd (?) operation had gone well, and he wasn't in as much pain any more... I will keep you posted if I see anything new, but I just had a quick look around and couldn't find anything. "

I have it from informed sources that Sunday Silence is doing well. The third operation was very successful. This is a very recent report. The report in the sports newspaper the other day about him being critical was apparently based on misinformation. I was thinking that since nothing appeared after that that there was a true news blackout (often the case here) but it would seem that he is really doing OK. Will keep you posted.

Probable bad news!! The latest breaking news (again, one paper, a possible scoop) is that SS is going to be put down within the week due to laminitis. Though my last post was based on very official sources saying he was OK, it may well be this latest news is true. This is often the way things are done here, deny to the last minute, then come clean.
I would say, expect the worst. It's horrible. All you SS fans, I'm sorry.

The bad news is confirmed by Shadai. Things are looking very bad for Sunday Silence.

Yes its bad luck for such a wonderful horse. Always easy to spot the Sunday Silences going around to the barrier...most of them are black and beautiful.
Lets hope that he recovers.

Sunday Silence develops laminitis
World renowned Japanese stallion Sunday Silence has now developed laminitis in his left front foot and is currently in intensive care at Shadai Stallion Station in Hokkaido.
The stud reported this morning that although it is not considered life threatening at the moment, they realise how serious a problem it may be.
The stallion is undergoing intensive care with several vets. Sunday Silence (16) had appeared to be steadily recovering after undergoing emergency surgery for the third time on July the 18th, after the horse contracted bacterial peritendinitis in its right forelimb.

Former Shadai stallion Sunday Silence, who died in 2002, topped the Japan General Sires list again in 2003, extending his unbroken run to nine titles as champion sire since 1995. Sunday Silence generated equivalent earnings of $US77,852,691 - three times that of nearest rival Brian's Time - and also headed the champion two-year-old sires' table, in which the runner-up was his unbeaten son, Fuji Kiseki.

Last weekend saw SUNDAY SILENCE’S Australian bred 2yo son VRIL perform the freakish feat of easily winning his debut in Japan by 1.25 lengths over 1800m against older opposition.
Although still only a 2yo, Vril is now being targeted towards the G1 Japanese Derby over 2400m on May 30th.

Consigned by Arrowfield stud at the 2003 Easter Yearling Sale, Vril, whose name aptly means “mysterious powers” set a new Australian record price for a yearling when he was knocked down to Japanese based owner breeder Mr Shigeyuki Okada of the Big Red Farm for A$1.7 million. The beautifully bred colt is out of the Mr Prospector mare Phantom Creek (a half sister to Champions Arazi and Noverre).

Arrowfield is to offer a Redoute’s Choice half brother to Vril at the 2004 Easter Yearling Sale.

Sunday Silence’s small number of Southern Hemisphere runners have included the G1 AJC Oaks winner Sunday Joy as well as the stakes placed Lavishly, Keep the Faith and Touched by God. Keep the Faith, who was a A$1.2 million yearling, looks set to become his sire’s next Australian stakeswinner following the 3yo’s two hollow victories this campaign, the most recent on Saturday when he was eased down to win by 7 lengths in open company over 1600m at Morphettville.

In the racing season just completed in Japan, Sunday Silence was crowned Champion Sire for the 9th consecutive year with progeny earnings of ¥8.5 billion (A$102 million) which was almost four times his nearest rival Brian’s Time’s earnings of ¥2.4 billion (A$27 million). Sunday Silence also captured his 9th Juvenile Sires title, his son Fuji Kesiki was second, and he recently joined the elite ranks of stallions to have sired more than 100 stakeswinners.

The last crop of yearlings by Sunday Silence will be offered at the 2004 Australian Easter Yearling Sale this April and these include a half brother to stakeswinner Miss Bussell (ex G1 winning Sir Tristram mare Lurestina), a colt bred on the same cross as Vril out of the Gone West mare Sonoray, and a colt out the stakes placed Zilzal mare Bright Finish who is a half sister to G1 winner Alydeed and closely related to leading sire Clever Trick.

SILENCE STILL GOLDEN:

Another deceased stallion, Sunday Silence, was successful in the Japanese sires lists again in 2004 with his progeny winning more than $US86 million ($111m) in the season.

Following the runaway success that had Sunday Silence better his 2003 year by almost $US10m, the stallion has continued to rewrite the Japanese record books and his overall earnings now are more than $US500m since 1994.

The stallion's biggest earner of 2004 was the Japan Cup winner Zenno Rob Roy, which carried on after that win with a group 1 success on Boxing Day, taking his winnings to $US9,274,115.

Sunday Silence was also the leading two-year-olds' sire in Japan this year.
