EL CONDOR PASA
El Condor Pasa, 1999 Horse of the Year in Japan and winner of the ‘98 Japan Cup (Jap-G1), died on Tuesday after suffering from colic at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan.
Surgery had been performed on El Condor Pasa on Sunday to correct a displaced intestine, but his condition deteriorated afterward, Racing Post reports.
His death was the second major blow to Shadai, Japan’s leading stud farm and the home of perennial top sire Sunday Silence, in as many weeks. On July 11, the farm had to euthanize former North American record-setting stallion End Sweep after complications developed from a fracture to his withers.
A seven-year-old son Kingmambo out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Saddlers Gal (Ire), El Condor Pasa proved a top competitor in Europe as well as Japan. He won eight of 11 career starts and finished second in his other three races while earning $3,502,404.
He began his career in Japan, where he won six of seven races and collected laurels as champion three-year-old colt of 1998 and champion older horse in ’99. Sent to France by owner Takashi Watanabe, El Condor Pasa won the 1999 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Fr-G1) and the Prix Foy (Fr-G2) and finished second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) and Prix d’Ispahan (Fr-G1).
El Condor Pasa began standing at Shadai in 2000, and his first offspring are yearlings this season. In 2002, Shadai listed his stud fee at $51,854.
