1. ROYAL TREASURE (14) Jockey: Lanfranco Dettori. Trainer: Alan Tam.
Macau: 8 starts 2-1-1
By Royal Academy – St. Bridget’s Well.
Royal Treasure will have the services of Dettori, and comes into the race with the best rating of 107. Royal Treasure has won two races in Macau, when ridden by visiting French jockey Christophe Soumillon, over 1200m and over 1500m on the firm tracks. He also placed third in the first lead-up to the Derby, the Macau Classic Trial on March 3.
Royal Treasure previously raced in Australia under the name of Sarson Trail where he won the Group Two, Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley over 1600m. Also in Australia, he placed second in the Group Two Breeders’ Stakes at Morphettville over 1200m behind one of his Derby rivals Happy Morning. Royal Treasure did not fare well in the barrier draw with the widest gate 14, however many are hoping Dettori can offset the wide draw.
2. HAPPY MORNING (10) Jockey: William Mongil. Trainer Kim Cheong.
Macau: 6; 2-1-1.
By Danehill – Humour.
Trainer Kim Cheong knows what it takes to win a Derby, when two in Macau including last years event with Take Champs. Happy Morning is sure to be one of the favorites for the race. From six starts in Macau, Happy Morning and won two races and also has placed twice. He is known for his determination in a finish, and also has performed well in the lead up events. Happy Morning took out the Macau Classic Trial, 1500m and also was a close third in the Macau Guineas, 1500m.
Before arriving in Macau, Happy Morning raced in Australia under the same name. In Australia he too out the Group Two Breeders” Stakes at Morphettville where he defeated Royal Treasure, while he also placed third in the Group One, Sires’ Produce at Flemington over 1400m.
3. KING OF BAY (9) Jockey: Robby Burke. Trainer Kim Cheong.
Macau: 8; 3-3-1.
By Hurricane Sky – Rose Of Marizza.
King Of Bay is considered a slight concern running out 1800m strongly, however has been in terrific form. King Of Bay placed second behind his stablemate Happy Morning in the Macau Classic Trial and then also finished fourth to Jazz Star in the Macau Guineas. Jockey Robby Burke is leading the Macau jockeys premiership, and has elected to stick with King Of Bay after also riding him in the two lead up events.
Racing in Sydney under the name of Sky Duke before his arrival in Macau, King Of Bay won at Canterbury earlier in his career.
4. GIBSON (3) Jockey: Glen Boss. Trainer Peter Leyshan.
Macau: 6; 2-2-0.
By Vettori – Duchy Of Cornwall.
Gibson has peaked at the right time for the Derby, with Australian rider Glen Boss flying into Macau for the ride. Gibson scored twice in Macau on the sand when he first arrived, but looks an even better horse on the turf. His trial for the Derby was good when he flew home in the Macau Guineas to only be defeated by a short head by Jazz Star.
Gibson also raced in Australia before arriving in Macau under the name of Lands End, where he took out the Listed Concept Sports Stakes, over 1412m at Flemington.
Gibson is sure to be one of the favorites for the race.
5. WITH LOVE (12) Jockey: Shane Scriven. Trainer: Joe Barnes.
Macau: 11; 5-3-0.
By On Target – View The Flag.
With Love is heading into the Derby without having raced on the turf. He arrived in Macau un-raced, but has proved to be a brilliant sprinter. He has won two races impressively over 1300m on the sand, which is the longest distance he has contested. With Love is drawn out wide in barrier 12, but will have no trouble speeding across to lead the field.
6. ZAPPER (2) Jockey: Sam Hyland. Trainer: Patrick Lee
Macau: 10; 3-0-1.
By Canny Lad – Century City.
Zapper has won three times in Macau on the sand surface. He was well beaten in the lead up event the Macau Guineas but did run well three starts back over 1500m when slightly unlucky. Zapper does rate a worry over 1800m but will have a nice run on the speed from barrier 3. Jockey Sammy Hyland has won two cup races in Macau in recent weeks and has been in great form.
With a strong possibility of rain, Zapper could be the dark horse. The obvious concern is 1800m but when racing in Australia under the name of Centrev before his arrival in Macau, he won up to 1300m on a wet track at Sandown in Melbourne.
7. EASY PUNCH (4) Jockey: Patrick Payne. Trainer: Mick Kent.
Macau: 5; 2-0-0.
By Dolphin Street – Mrs. Williams.
Easy Punch has had a sound preparation for the Derby, and if the event is held on a wet track, will prove very hard to beat but he is also capable of the good tracks. He has the services of Australian Patrick Payne, who has won the Macau Jockey’s title two seasons ago so knows the Taipa track very well. Easy Punch won at his second start over 1500m on a good track then stepped up to 1700m to score on a soft track. He put in a great trial for the Derby when he flew home from near least to run fourth in the Macau Classic Trial.
Easy Punch previously raced in Australia as Dollfus. He won three races in Australia in succession before arriving in Macau, at Ballarat over 1400m, Geelong over 1700m, and Sandown over 1600m. All his wins in Australia were on the wet tracks so with rain, it should prove hard to beat.
8. GOLD DIAMOND (1) Jockey: Pat Eddery: Trainer: Kim Cheong.
Macau: 11 starts 5-2-0.
By Honor Grades – Panza Anne.
Gold Diamond proved he was very smart when he won his first four races including wins on heavy tracks over 1400m and 1500m. Gold Diamond ahs also placed over 1700m on a soft track. The horse arrived in Macau un-raced, and will appreciate rain. Champion English jockey Pat Eddery will make the trip to Macau for the ride.
9. NO COMMENT (5) Jockey: Peter Ho. Trainer Alan Tam.
Macau 24 starts 5-4-2.
By Blues Traveller – Piggy Bank.
No Comment is a late inclusion in the Derby field after stablemate Suntex General was withdrawn. He has been in Macau longer than any other galloper, and has the most experience on his side. No Comment is another that will like a wet track, he has placed second over 1700m on a heavy track when only beaten a short head and has won up to 1500m. From a good draw No Comment will be hoping for run and is a good second-string horse for Alan Tam. However with the level weights of the race, No Comment is the lowest rated horse on 75, so has too much to do at the handicaps.
10. THUNDER BIRD (13) Jockey Danny Brereton Trainer: Mick Kent.
Macau 13 starts 2-4-1.
By Night Shift – Idyllic.
The second runner for Mick Kent, Thunder Bird will be ridden by Danny Brereton who took out last years Derby. Thunder Bird has placed up to 1800m on a firm track in Macau, and is coming into the race with a placing on the sand over 1700m at his most recent start. Thunder Bird should stay the trip.
Before arriving in Macau, Thunder Bird raced in Australia under the name Active, and two races including a 1400m event on a good track at Randwick in Sydney.
11. ALIBABA (11) Jockey: Jim Byrne. Trainer: Eric Suen.
Macau 12; 4-2-3.
By Rory’s Jester – Plush Princess.
Alibaba is another that may be tested over 1800m. However the horse led over 1400m on a good track to be defeated a head and also contested a 1500m contest three starts back finishing third, beaten 6 ¼ lengths.
He has won up to 1`300m on the sand, and has the services of Jim who has been in very good form since arriving in Macau.
Alibaba arrived in Macau un-raced.
12. BEST OPPORTUNITY (8) Jockey: Nathan Day. Trainer: Joe Barnes.
Macau 5; 1-0-1.
By Simonstad – Tribal Beat.
Best Opportunity is lightly raced, however did run very well over the trip of 1800m when defeated only four lengths at his third start. Best Opportunity raced in Perth Australia before arriving in Macau under the name Simon Said. In Perth he mainly contested black type events, including a win in the Group Three, Sires’ Produce over 1400m at Ascot.
13 FREE RANGER (7) Jockey Olivier Doleuze. Trainer: Kim Cheong.
Macau 7; 1-2-2.
By Danehill – Leica.
Free Ranger is a beautifully looking son of Danehill and looks to have a touch of class. He is tried over the 1800m having won on a good track, and also ran a terrific race in one of Macau’s best staying contests, the Fat Choy Cup, when he finished third against the older horses. Free Ranger stormed home in the Macau Classic Trial over 1500m from near last to finish in fifth position.
Having raced in Australia under the same name, Free Ranger won at Warwick Farm in Sydney, and also finished third in the Group Two, Peter Pan Stakes at Rosehill.
Free Ranger will stay, and will have the services of French jockey Olivier Doleuze.
14. XIN JIANG BO BO (6) Jockey: Eurica Rosa da Silva. Trainer Yu Tai Lam.
Macau 6; 2-1-0.
By Scenic – Pontal Lass.
Xin Jiang Bo Bo scraped into the Derby field, winning on the heavy tracks in the past two weeks. He will be having his third start in as many weeks but will swim through conditions if the rain comes.
One thing for sure and certain is that Xin Xiang Bo Bo will stay out the 1800m. He raced in Australia under the name of Panoramic Star, where he won two races over 1600m, and 1800m at the Gold Coast and also placed second over 2200m at the Gold Coast and all on good tracks, before arriving in Macau. He is out of the race at the Handicaps, but will stay the trip.

With Derby-winning jockey Dettori in the saddle, Momu (2.6 favourite approx) raced in 4th to the home turn and then battled on fairly to finish about 5th or 6th.

Monday, April 8, 2002 RACING Dettori takes Macau by storm
NICK PULFORD and ALAN AITKEN
Frankie Dettori landed the $2.2 million Macau Derby in sensational style yesterday with a brilliant ride aboard Royal Treasure.
The Italian's mount was drawn 14, but he grabbed the initiative with a bold move which took him from near last to the front about the 600-metre mark and from there Royal Treasure ran away with the 1,800-metre event to score by 4-1/2 lengths.
isn't such a move usually regarded as pretty risky. i think cassidy copped a lot of flack for a couple of such rides in Aust over the weekend. still 4.5L makes it a great win.
Dettori, one of five top overseas riders recruited by the Macau Jockey Club for the big day, was delighted with the success on his first visit to Macau. "The Club have done a great promotion," he said. "I've enjoyed being here and I'd love to come back."
Glen Boss, who arrived from Australia yesterday morning following his Group One victory in the AJC Oaks at Randwick on Saturday, was second aboard Gibson, having encountered trouble in running.
Happy Morning, ridden by Macau-based Frenchman William Mongil, was third. Patrick Payne, Olivier Doleuze and Pat Eddery - the other three visiting jockeys - finished fourth, sixth and 11th respectively.
But there were successes elsewhere on the 12-race card for Boss, Payne and Doleuze. Boss took the fourth race on Super Fortune, fellow Australian Payne landed the opener aboard Perfection and Doleuze scored a double with New Age in race six and All Pass in the last event. But the Frenchman was warned following his short-head win on New Age as he mistook the winning post and produced his trademark winning salute, almost losing the race to Diddlio.
Doleuze was also told to tone down his exuberant victory celebrations during his three-month stint in Hong Kong, which finished last month. And there were many during his "unbelievable" stint, as Doleuze rode 26 winners from 134 rides - a strike rate of just under 20 per cent.

On another matter, it probably ended up being a very lucky day for the MJC. If Doleuze had been beaten on New Age, they would have had to give him 2 months and a big fine. That show pony stuff as he crosses the line is sure to cost him big one day - and it nearly did on Sunday.

I hear the trainer of Momu said that only thing that might help him now is gelding the owners as well.
