Dettori loses local map but adds frequent flyer miles
by Howard Wright
FRANKIE DETTORI, who is hoping to climax his two-month stay in Dubai by landing at least one big prize on Saturday’s World Cup card, is not expecting to start his season in England in earnest until Newmarket’s Craven meeting on April 16.
Dettori will return to England with his family on Sunday, and may ride at Kempton on Easter Saturday, if John Gosden has significant runners for him, but then he has three important overseas missions.
He will ride in Macau for the first time on April 7, when he hasbeen booked to ride the ex-Australian colt Royal Treasure in the local Derby.
His next overseas missions involve dates in Dubai for the UAE Oaks, on April 13, and the vital Godolphin trials, whose timing has yet to be finalised, before he takes up residence in Newmarket.
Pronouncing himself fit and raring to go, but ‘golfed out’, Dettori said on Wednesday: “It’s been a good winter for the family and me, but it’s time to go home at the weekend.
“There isn’t much decent racing in the first weeks of the season – and I’ve lost the map to Wolverhampton – so I’ll spend time with the family in between the other commitments before we get to the Craven meeting.”
