The SCMP summed up yesterday's races by headlining AA's article "Marwing magic steals the show". No doubt Marwing had a wonderful day -- after all he rode four winners. Of the leading jockeys, Marwing is my favourite. Unlike Dye, he's seldom involved in controversies. And unlike Whyte, his riding is seldom questioned by punters.
However, I feel that the real star was Howard Cheng. He rode 1W5P yesterday. That's a very good result, considering that his horses weren't of the same calibre as Marwing's. This is HC's first season riding as a senior jockey rather than an apprentice and his results have been quite respectable. It is probably not realistic to expect HC to win the jockey championship any time soon. What I hope is that he'll be among the top 5 within the next 2 to 3 seasons.

Howard is extremely hungry to win.
Something very important will happen to him in
the end of May.

Always good to see a hungry jockey! What's the most important thing that can happen to a young man? So he's going to get married? Wonder if he'd ask his old boss Hayes or one of his buddies in Hayes's yard to vaseline...

Its taken a bit of time but Howard Cheng is gradually making the transition into the senior ranks and looks set to become the premier local jockey if he isn't already.
Eddie Lai has also improved this season I might add and deserves praise.

Eddie Lai won The Honour at short price for Allan in a 2000m race yesterday. Most trainers prefer to use expat jockeys for 2000m+ races. So Eddie Lai seems to have earned Allan's trust already.

surely he would not give the ride to Lai unless the owners requested same. this has always been my assumption in such cases without any firm evidence to confirm it. anyone with any other ideas ??

Ivan has used Eddie Lai plenty of times and over all distances. And with reasonable success. Probably worth a point or two extra on the tote board when compared to Marwing and the other stars. Also Lai had ridden this horse at its only previous run for Allan.
