Ex-trainer TP Wong who is now a racing columnist at the Chinese newspaper The Sun severely criticised Howard Cheng in his column today:
"I have always mentioned that the JC and trainers should give more opportunities to the Chinese jockeys. However, after seeing the way Cheng used the whip at the straight when aboard Ganbaria Star and Chariot of Wei Hai Wednesday night, I thought we were back to the amateur days. These young lads don't deserve any help.
In order to get a horse to accelerate or maintain its speed, a jockey's rhymthic pushing is of paramount importance. The use of the whip is only of secondary importance. Neither Tony Cruz in the past nor Coetzee in the present uses the whip before the finishing line. When Cheng rode Ganbaria Star and Chariot of Wei Hai, he failed to bend down to adpot the proper posture. Instead he kept his waist straight and whipped the horses ferociously, so much so that he broke his whip when lashing Chariot of Wei Hai. That didn't help the horse to accelerate at all. I thought it was more abusing animals rather than riding! Had Cheng treated any of my horses like that, I would have given him a real verbal lashing. The stipes didn't even say a word about such reckless riding. Is it because they lack in professionalsim? Or are they being so lax that their eyes so no evil?"
