Tokyo Racecourse sets sights on world's largest video screen in racecourse
Tokyo Racecourse, with construction still under way on the grandstand, will become home to the world's largest television screen in racecourse, Japan Racing Association's President Masayuki Takahashi announced Jan. 31 at a press conference at the JRA headquarters in Tokyo's Roppongi. The television screen is expected to be up and running from fall of next year.
Presently, two large video screens are installed at the course, one at the finish line, the other at the final turn. The screens will have been in use for a decade as of next year and, because they are showing signs of wear, will be replaced by new easy-to-see LED (light-emitting diode) screens.
The main screen at the wire will be replaced with a giant screen capable of being split three ways.
The combined screen will measure 11 meters in height and 60 meters in width, and, with a total surface area of 660 sq. meters, will be three times the size of the present screen. The race finishing order, presently displayed on a separate board, will be incorporated into the television screen.

The giant screen will be the largest in racecourse in the world, topping the current record holder at Hong Kong's Sha Tin Racecourse by an additional 100 sq. meters in surface area. The split-screen capability will allow races to be viewed from different angles, focus on multiple horses in the paddock, or display the results from other racecourses, all simultaneously.
Construction is scheduled to be completed from September 2006 with full operation ready for the fall racing meet.
Construction currently under way on the Tokyo stands is expected to wrap up by the end of March in time for the meet beginning April 23 of this year.
