Weichong Marwing could finish only fourth in the South African Derby yesterday, but had the compensation of a Group Three winner on the Champions Day card at Turffontein, Johannesburg.
The Mike Azzie-trained 20-1 shot Top Billing failed to add to Marwing's six SA Derby wins in the Group One feature over 2,450 metres, which was won by 5-1 chance Timber Trader.
Marwing earlier landed the Camellia Handicap, a Group Three event over 1,200 metres, aboard 5-1 shot Her Way. Compatriot Robbie Fradd, licensed to ride in South Africa during his current suspension in Hong Kong, finished fourth on Forest Ivory (12-1).
Marwing missed yesterday's Sha Tin fixture to take a full book of rides at the $2.9 million meeting, which also featured three other Group One events.
But the South African will return for the day meeting at Sha Tin on Wednesday with his Hong Kong championship hopes still intact, having slipped only one winner further behind in the title race during his absence. Marwing is fourth with 49 winners, six behind joint-leaders Douglas Whyte and Shane Dye. Fradd, who has landed two winners in South Africa since returning to the saddle this month, had rides in all but the Derby on yesterday's Turffontein card.
The former Hong Kong champion was suspended here in early February pending the outcome of an Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation into alleged race-fixing and illegal bookmaking, though no-one has been charged in the case.
Fradd was given a licence to ride in South Africa after the Hong Kong Jockey Club stewards did not ask for his ban to be reciprocated.
