Tuesday, 5 October 2004: The Victorian TAB today launched the Mystery 6 - a new bet type that has the potential to pay dividends of $1 million.

Tabcorp has described Mystery 6, to operate for the first time on Saturday's Caulfield Guineas meeting, as the most exciting new wagering product for 10 years.

"Mystery 6 is an exciting new product and is unique to racing in Australia," said Michael Piggott, Tabcorp’s chief executive of wagering.

"It's simple and great fun. Regular punters and the racegoers who enjoy an occasional flutter will love Mystery 6.”

Mystery 6 will be likened to "lotto on legs" as it involves the random computer selection of horses in the last six races of a Saturday Melbourne metropolitan race meeting.

Punters do not their make their own selections but will collect a dividend if their ticket has three or more winning horses.

A minimum $5 Mystery 6 bet will give customers five lines of six random numbers and these numbers will match six horses in the last six races of a Saturday Melbourne thoroughbred meeting.

A dividend will be paid if the selections find the winners in three or more of the six races.

Mystery 6 will pay a dividend for three, four or five winning numbers with the highest dividend for all six numbers. The dividend depends on the size of the pool.

Tabcorp expects punters will be attracted to Mystery 6 by the guarantee of a tier one pool of $1 million for the Caulfield Cup, Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup race meetings.

Punters can purchase a mystery 6 in $5, $10, $15 or $20 options. There are also 13 different system options that increases the number of combinations.

Mystery 6 punters can also fill in an entry form to be in a draw for a new Holden ‘V6’. The promotion runs from October 9 to November 13.

Mystery 6 will operate on the last six races of the Melbourne metropolitan meeting on a Saturday. If there are scratchings the “win” favourite will be used as the substitute in line with other multi-leg bet types such as the quadrella.

Mystery 6 has been under development for two years and will initially operate only on weekly on thoroughbred races but will eventually be extended to harness and greyhound meetings.

Mystery 6 is only available in Victoria at present but Tabcorp plans to launch the product in NSW pending regulatory approval.

Mysrety 6 is th scond new bet type launched this week by tabcorp.

Duet betting - the extension of traditional quinella betting to cover any two placegetters in a race - was introduced last Saturday.

The well-received flexi-betting option introduced by the NSW TAB is set to become part of the Melbourne scene while the southern medium of roving bankers is heading north. The Victorian's Parlay which is "much more exotic" is coming this way while the NSW TAB's much-maligned Spinner bet is on the way out.

Spinner bet will go when the internet system is overhauled in coming months while Tabcorp is keen on introducing its new Mystery Six to NSW punters.

Last week the Mystery Six jackpotted to more than $1.1m with a couple from Reservoir taking home $590,000 and a bayside suburb syndicate carving up the same amount.

The Mystery Six has attracted critics but Piggott said the biggest gambling house in the country was "looking to remedy that".

The new bet type hasn't caught on with the regular racing punter with Piggott saying, "people it was aimed at are the non-core punter ... they love it".
