Just hours after Baffert left his Saturday night wedding reception in California, racing's most recognized trainer watched his Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner polish off four challengers in the Haskell.
The jet black colt easily held off Magic Weisner by 3 1/2 lengths, with Like A Hero third, followed by Puck and Mr. Mellon in the five-horse field.
Back in his customary role as the pace setter, Kentucky Derby winning-War Emblem proved he is still at the front of the 3-year-old pack with a convincing victory in the $1 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park on Sunday.
War Emblem is the first Kentucky Derby winner to also win the Haskell. His final time of 1:48 1/5 was the 10th fastest in 35-year history of the Haskell. He defeated runner-up Magic Weisner by four lengths.
Sent off at odds of 2-5 in a field of five, War Emblem was able to set easy fractions of :23 4/5, :47 1/5 and 1:10 3/5 under jockey Victor Espinoza. In the turn for home, War Emblem left Puck and Mr. Mellon, second and third to open up a five-length advantage. Magic Weisner rallied four wide to edge out Like A Hero for second place. Puck was fourth.
War Emblem, who also won the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) in front-running style, missed all chance of claiming the Triple Crown when he stumbled badly at the start of the Belmont Stakes on June 8. The Haskell was his first start since the Belmont fiasco.
It was the second straight Haskell victory for trainer Bob Baffert and The Thoroughbred Corporation, who won last year with Point Given. Prince Ahmed bin Salman, owner of Thoroughbred Corp., died of a heart attack July 22.
The $600,000 winner's purse pushed War Emblem's career earnings to about $3.5 million. It was his seventh win in 11 lifetime starts.
War Emblem paid $2.60, $2.20, $2.10. Magic Weisner returned $2.80 and $2.10. Like A Hero paid $2.10 to show. The $2 exacta was $.760.
