In Apple Daily today, it is reported that Ronald Arculli will succeed Alan Li as Chairman. In terms of seniority, Arculli now ranks third behind Chairman Alan Li and Deputy Chairman CHAU Cham Son. It is expected both Li and Chau will retire in August and that Arculli will be elected Chairman. During an interview, Arculli said that should he become Chairman, his priorities would be to be actively involved in the legalistion of soccer gambling and combatting online betting. He also said that, in spite of fact that there are many talented people working for the JC, the 100 year old organisation has become a huge bureaucracy resistant to change. To combat the hi-tech illegal bookies, the mentatlity of the JC management must be changed. In the past, the Chairman used to take a hands off approach and not involved in the day to day running of the JC. The prospect that the no nonsense Arculli will be elected chairman has already spent chills down the spine of the many JC executives. Arculli said that his anger with the recent 6-up dividend blunder is still not over. Quoting an racing journalist, the paper also said Arculli is highly regarded as an honest, fair, credible and competent person and that his impending election is seen to be a positive one.

Two things I remember about Arculli...
The first one is that he resigned as Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Party when the party supported the government in rejecting a no-confidence vote against Attorney General Elsie Leung in the Sally Aw case. So he is a guy with srong principles.
The second one is that he once argued vehemently against a photo finish decision against his pick. So this guy can be quite stubborn! Whoever made the decision must be trembling now. :D :D :D

The JC has been going downhill for a while now, a change of leadership & hopefully direction could turn things around ?

Surely the Jockey Club should be embracing on-line betting and taking a leadership role rather than trying to combat it?

The one he had backed.
In a sidebar to the main article I quoted, Arculli said he liked to back longshots as he didn't bet much and so wouldn't win much by backing favourites.
