Fusaichi Pegasus trot continues

Fusaichi Pegasus last night took his remarkable record to 8 winners, 1 second- and 1 third-placegetter from his first 10 starters in Europe and America this season.

At Clairefontaine racecourse, Deauville, daughter Sur Ma Vie, ridden by Olivier Peslier, ran on strongly to hold off the challenge of Prince Khaled Abdullah-owned filly Birthplace. In winning, the classy dark brown filly gave Fusaichi Pegasus a winner-to-runner strike rate of 80 per cent, with 100 per cent of his runners in the money at either their first or second starts.

Significantly, Sur Ma Vie won on turf, as have all three of the Aidan O'Brien-trained winners by Fusaichi Pegasus in Ireland. And with four, or half, of his winners now on turf, Fusaichi Pegasus is proving himself every bit as adept at siring winners on Australia's preferred racing surface as he is on the dirt tracks of America.

Most exciting of all the Fusaichi Pegasus progeny to date is American colt Roman Ruler, considered a Group One horse in the making by champion trainer, Bob Baffert. Roman Ruler is due to re-appear at Del Mar later this month, where he is expected to consolidate his position as a leading Breeders' Cup and, next year, Kentucky Derby contender.

And Aidan O'Brien has stated that his colt Scandinavia, winner last weekend in Ireland, will now be aimed at a Listed or Group race. Another winner, Todd Pletcher-trained colt Killenaule, has already been Listed stakes-placed with his good third in last weekend's Colin Stakes at Woodbine in Canada.

Dubbed 'Superman' at birth, Fusaichi Pegasus is that rare creature - a sales-topping yearling who went on to achieve racing success at the highest level. Purchased at Keeneland July for US$4 million as a yearling, the son of Mr Prospector and Danzig mare Angel Fever went on to win the Kentucky Derby with a performance that many experts rated the best in the last 30 years.

Fusaichi Pegasus has certainly got off to a flying start at stud and has topped all averages at yearling and breeze-up sales in the USA this year. One of his breeze-up colts, indeed, set a new world record for a 2yo-in-training at US$4.5million, evidence of the huge regard in which Fusaichi Pegasus is held in America.

His racetrack results speak for themselves and if he makes a similar start in Australia this season, Fusaichi Pegasus must be considered a serious challenger to Encosta de Lago as Danehill's likely successor for Champion Sire honours in years to come.
