Japan’s New King Of The Turf
Japan has a new turf hero in the Kunihide Matsuda-trained King Kamehameha (Kingmambo).
Following a five-length romp in the JRA NHK Mile Cup (Jpn G1) (1600m) at Tokyo on May 9, the three-year old colt had little trouble stretching his stamina out to 2400m with a record breaking win in the 150,000,000 yen (A$1.8m) Tokyo Yushun (Jpn G1) (Japanese Derby) at Tokyo on Sunday.
King Kamehameha sped over the 2400m turf course in 2:23.30 to record his sixth win in seven starts. It was left to a chasing pack of six sons of Sunday Silence to make a race of it with the favourite. The Kyoto Shimbun Hai (Jpn G2) hero Heart’s Cry got closest 1 ½-lengths back, followed by Aoba Sho (Jpn G2) winner Higher Game, Kyowa Splendor, Suzuka Mambo, Satsuki Sho (Jpn G1) hero Daiwa Major and Pisa No Kukai.
After winning his only two juvenile starts at Kyoto and Hanshin King Kamehameha met defeat for the first time when third to Focal Point (End Sweep) and Meiner Makros (Fuji Kiseki) in the Keisei Hai (Jpn G3) over 2000m at Nakayama at his three-year old debut. He then won his next two at Hanshin before his five-length victory over Cosmo Sunbeam in the Group 1 NHK Mile.
Conceived in Kentucky but foaled in Japan, King Kamehameha continues the extraordinary success achieved of late by Lane’s End Farm’s exquisitely bred Kingmambo. Led by King Kamehameha’s Group 1 double Kingmambo in May alone has also been represented by Russian Rhythm who beat the boys in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. A day later Miss Mambo (USA), out of a daughter of Australian champion Strawberry Road, finished third in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) and Ershaad finished fourth in the colts equivalent Poule d'Essai des Poulains (G1) a race previously won by his sire.
Another stakes-winner for Kingmambo in May was Illustrious Miss who took the Chartwell Fillies' Stakes (G3) at Lingfield before finishing third to the unbeaten Attraction in the Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) at the Curragh on May 23.
Godolphin’s Kingmambo colt Rule Of Law stamped himself an Epsom Derby chance following a battling second in the Dante Stakes (G2) at York on May 12.
King Kamehameha is a half brother to The Deputy (Petardia) who began his career in England where he started five times a juvenile winning a maiden race at Epsom and placed in the other four starts. Purchased by Team Valor The Deputy became one of the leading 3-year olds in the U.S where he won the Santa Anita derby from War Chant, the Santa Catalina Stakes over Coolmore Stud’s High Yield and the High Rise Handicap defeating High Lane Farm’s Promontory Gold (Gone West). The Deputy finished second to Fusaichi Pegasus in the San Felipe Stakes and was unplaced behind that horse in the Kentucky Derby.
King Kamehameha and The Deputy are out of the Last Tycoon mare Manfath who was placed just once in a seven start career before being sold at the 1994 Tattersalls December Sales for just 4,200gns.
Manfath's dam Pilot Bird, a half sister to Racing Post Trophy (G1) runner-up Mack The Knife, is a daughter of Epsom Derby winner Blakeney out of the Green Dancer mare The Dancer, the winner of the May Hill Stakes (LR) and third in the Epsom Oaks (G1). The Dancer is a sister to Kazadancoa, dam of the graded winners Jacodra, Jacodra's Devil and Changing Ways, and granddam of Breeders Futurity Stakes (G2) winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Tejano Run. The Dancer's half-sister Beaming Bride is the dam of $1.6million earner Simply Majestic, triple Grade 1 winner and Champion older male in Italy Alwuhush, and Rothmans International (G1) winner Husband.
King Kamehameha's fourth dam Khazaeen (Charlottesville) was a half-sister to Runaway Bride, the dam of champion racehorse and influential sire Blushing Groom (Red God).
