Police arrest trainer's wife
ANTOINE SO and ALAN AITKEN
The wife of horse trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam was arrested for drink-driving yesterday after an early-morning crash in Central.
Police said Jane Chapple-Hyam, 36, tested positive to a breathalyser test and was released on bail pending further investigations.
She is the daughter of Andrew Peacock, the former leader of the Liberal Party in Australia, who was also an ex-Australian ambassador to the United States.
The incident took place at 12.44am in Ice House Street, when the Mercedes-Benz Mrs Chapple-Hyam was driving came up behind a taxi that had stopped because of a burst tyre.
The taxi driver, surnamed Sin, 33, was repairing the tyre when Mrs Chapple-Hyam's car allegedly hit him, injuring his fingers, police said. There was then a dispute during which Mrs Chapple-Hyam's car keys were damaged and she called the police.
Mr Sin was also arrested for suspected criminal damage and was released on $500 bail pending further inquiries.
A Jockey Club spokesman refused to comment on the incident due to privacy concerns.
English-born trainer Mr Chapple-Hyam came to Hong Kong in 1999 and took over the stable of French trainer Patrick Biancone, who was suspended after two of his horses tested positive to prohibited substances.
In the last racing season, Mr Chapple-Hyam had eight winners.
The previous season his stable produced six winners and he was asked by the Jockey Club to explain his poor performance after failing to reach the target of 12 winners for the season.
