Well, the "professionalism" of NZ jockeys was clearly on display at Trentham last Saturday. Despite knowing that a "big chill" was sweeping up the country, and Wellington with a southerly on a winters day has more in common with Antarctica, the jockeys said after race 4 that they couldn't continue riding because of ... wait for it ...
their hands were too cold. Yes, apparently with frozen hands they couldn't control their mounts properly and were afraid of the potential for accidents and not getting the best out of their rides. NZ jockeys trying to get the best from their mounts brought a wry smile to my face as half of them wouldn't know how to, but that's another story.
Haven't they ever heard of gloves? Oh well, because their hands were too cold the Wellington Racing Club are out of pocket about $75,000 on top of a cancellation of one of their premier days in summer due to ... yes the jockeys not wanting to ride on an unsafe track.
