Sha Tin swells as 88,864 ride Year of Horse
Nick Pulford
The Year of the Horse started on a positive note for the Hong Kong Jockey Club when yesterday's Lunar New Year spectacular at Sha Tin produced the best attendance and turnover figures of the season.
With the meeting coinciding with Valentine's Day, along with unseasonably good weather and a high-quality 10-race card, 88,864 racegoers flocked to Sha Tin, with another 9,217 cross-betting at Happy Valley to produce a total of 98,801.
The overall attendance was the second best for the Chinese New Year meeting since the handover in 1997 - bettered only by the exceptional 116,188 crowd which celebrated the first year of the new millennium in 2000 - and was a six per cent rise on last year's figure of 93,256.
Betting turnover was $1.26 billion, down slightly on last year's figure of $1.28 billion, but still the best for the season and a huge fillip for the Jockey Club at the end of a week dominated by allegations of race-fixing against leading jockeys Robbie Fradd and John Egan.
"The figures are very positive considering the economic situation in Hong Kong," said Lawrence Wong, the Jockey Club's chief executive. "Of course, racing has had negative publicity over the past week, but the important fact to remember is that no one has been charged in this case.
"The Jockey Club has always stated that it is determined to ensure racing is clean and I think people in Hong Kong recognise that the sport here is very well controlled.
ufo are you trying to convert to chinese ?? it is a wonder they didn't try to scrub up an extra 24 so they could announce the crowd as 88,888. can you imagine the roar when they announced same on course ?? note also that 64 = 8² :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

yes I thought the same...Im sure that there were plenty of guards outside the course standing around outside the gates doing nothing, or perhaps they might have offered free entry to some of the taxi drivers waiting outside. Can you imagine that!
A brilliant observation on the 8 squared...I feel much better now.
By the way, the 8th race of the program saw 10, 14, 8, 3 come in in that order. Add them all together and you get 35.( 3 plus 5 = 8. )

ufo, rotfl, but i think you have been mixing with too many aliens -- are you a "third rock from the sun" fan ??
Hobbes, it is interesting that you have listed as being ( under your profile) your location "extra terrestrial"...no I wasnt a third rock from the sun fan but I was a big fan of Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy ( I liked Myron the robot best of all)
By the way, if you times 8 by 8 by 8 by 64 you get 32768.00
add these together and you get 26. 2 plus 6 = 8.
The truth is out there grasshopper....

Tomorrow at Sha Tin: Triumphant Feeling
Race 8 No 8 and has drawn Gate 8
SPOOKY......
To be ridden by B Marcus. And where's he lying in the championship at the moment? You guessed it - 8th
And what meeting No is it tomorrow? meeting 44.
4+4=8
Really spooky, rubbingtug! Even the B in B Marcus looks like an "8". My fear is that it will finish 8th though...
I think this lucky number stuff could be my go. Really need a change of luck.
Sold my mum's house and bought Enron shares 3 months ago. Then sold my own house and took the good odds about Egypt topping the medal tally at the Winter Olympics.
For the record, I do have a good thing at Sha Tin tomorrow. In race 9, The Most Dauntless. He is number 14 and has barrier 9 which adds up to 22, which is also my IQ.

rotflmfao
Unfortunatly however 2+2=4 which is quite unlucky ( at least as far as the chinese see it)
There is however the possibilty of cloning 4 of you which woould give you all a combined IQ of 88 which might be considered lucky.

Nice post doggy.
Anyway, Triumphant Feeling is a chance I'd say.
Had Doggy been able to figure out that 14+9=23, his IQ would have been 100+ rather than 22. :) :) :)
Yeah....I coulda been a contender!
Just wrong by 1 isn't bad. My calculator is on the fritz. But I'll be buying a new one after today's racing at Sha Tin.
I'll list my best....and I think maybe I could set up some service where you all pay for my tips in the future. But i'll give you a free sample this time....only this time!
Q in race 2: Don Insight and Heart's Desire...
then put the lot on King Horse in the third. And save upfor a late crash on The Most Dauntless and Sprinter. My lay of the day is Golden Years. Good luck..
Didn't do too badly....few quite close and I think it's a good selling point for my planned tips-for-sale venture.
Doggy, I didn't do too badly either! I said r8 #8 Triumphant feeling might finish 8th -- actually finished 7th.
A momentous minute in time
It took just one minute last night for the historic moment to come and go. At 8.02pm digital clocks from Tweed Heads to Tasmania clicked over to show 200220022002 - 20:02 hours on February 20, 2002.
There were no computer experts warning about the dire consequences of a Palindrome Bug that would match the dreaded Y2K Bug. The moon did not fall from the sky and the poles did not melt.
As Mike Smith, of Bilgola Plateau, predicted in yesterday's Letters page, it was, for most people "a pretty normal day".
The last palindrome date with 12 digits probably attracted even less attention, falling as it did at 7.51pm on December 21, 1591, producing 195121121591. Unfortunately that was before the invention of the digital clock.
A triple palindrome occurred at 11.11am on November 11, 1111 - 111111111111.
If you blinked last night, it will happen again at 8.02pm on October 1 - 200201102002.
