Shane Dye will be a surprise starter at Flemington on Sunday when he rides Dash For Cash for trainer Rick Hore-Lacy.
Dye, who heads back to his Hong Kong base next Monday to prepare for its new racing season, which begins on September1, had not planned to ride in a race during his holiday in Australia.
However, his fiancee, Emma Kate Sullivan, influenced him to have his only ride in Sunday's Aurie's Star Handicap.
"Friends of Emma's part-own Dash For Cash and I'm riding the horse as a favour to them," Dye said yesterday.
"I don't know a real lot about the horse but he is a Group1 winner and is very consistent, so he should be a good ride."
Also nominated for the race, a stepping stone to the spring carnival, are Bart Cummings's VRC Oaks winner Magical Miss and Brian Mayfield-Smith's Prince Rubiton.
Dye finished second in the Hong Kong jockeys' premiership behind Douglas Whyte last season and is looking forward to attempting to reverse that result.
"I'm leaving for Hong Kong on Monday and can't wait to get back. That's where my future is," he said. "I'll go to the wrestling with my son in Melbourne on Saturday night, ride on Sunday, and then go back to Hong Kong."
Dye was in action at Randwick trackwork yesterday morning when he partnered Shogun Lodge and Thorn Park for trainer Bob Thomsen.
"Bobby always wants me to ride work for him when I'm in Sydney, and I was only too happy to ride Shogun Lodge and Thorn Park," Dye said. "They both felt very strong in their work and Bob has two very good horses in them."
Thomsen said Shogun Lodge was likely to resume from a spell in the Premiere Stakes at Rosehill on August 17 and not to wait for the Warwick Stakes the following week.
"He's going so well on the track. I've got to run him in a race," Thomsen said.
