Very good question, hobbes. If I were in still advertising, I would never do an ad like that. Too many commercials are done because they are different just for difference's sake and don't relate to the products. I always remember what Leo Burnett, founder of the eponymous ad agency, once said: If you want to be different, you can always wake up in the morning with a sock in your mouth.
