The 9th Japan Cup Owners' Summit sponsored by Japan Owners' Association (JOA), was held on Friday, November 22,at the Hotel Nikko Tokyo.

Welcome by JOA Chairman, Mr. Yuzo Tanimizu

"Following the 9.11 terrorist attacks on the United States last year, dark shadows have been cast over the economies and politics worldwide, I do appreciate all of you who have traveled a great distance to be with us today.

Moreover, it is a great pleasure for us, as the organizers, to be able to hold the 9th Japan Cup Owners' Summit today.

This Summit was held for the first time in 1994 inviting the representative owners of the invited countries that had horses running in the Japan Cup.

Since then, in conjunction with the holding of each Japan Cup Race, we have held this summit and from the sixth summit, in 1999, we have also asked for the attendance of representative owners of countries other than those participating in the Japan Cup.

Although we continue these meetings each year, this conference does not aim to reach any specific conclusions, which must be mutually abided by , or that the participants need to act upon, but rather, this summit is held as an international friendship event organized by the JOA.

This is an occasion at which we are be able to exchange information, deepen mutual friendships and contribute to horseracing in general, as well as act for the development of industries related to horseracing. We also aim for the further improvement of social status of the horse owners of every country."

Remarks by Mr.Yoshitaka Kitahara, President of Japan Association for International Horse Racing (JAIR), Chairman for the Summit meeting.

"Before we start our discussion, we have about a six or seven minute video of the Japanese Derby this year; we'd like to show you.

This year's Japanese Derby winner, Tanino Gimlet's owner/ breeder is none other than Mr. Tanimizu sitting right here. Tanino Gimlet was also to run in the Japan Cup this Sunday.

Symbolic Kris S, which was the second to Tanino Gimlet in the Japan Derby will run in the Japan Cup. Symbolic Kris S will probably be the favorite in Cup this Sunday. But, regrettably, Tanino Gimlet suffered bowed tendon in the left-foreleg. Therefore, after the winning of Japanese Derby, he could not run again and was retired in September anto begin a new career as a stallion.

Therefore, we are now looking to the future crops of Tanino Gimlet. Tanino Gimlet is by Brian's time, out of Tanino Crystal.

He won five out of eight starts, with one second place and two thirds. Finishing third place or higher in all his outings is total winnings were 386 million yen, which is about $3.22 million U.S.

As you may have noticed in the video, Mr. Koizumi, our Prime Minister, was there. He enjoyed the race and took part in the awards ceremony. This is the first time we have had the Prime Minister at the racecourse in 44 years.

Not having the Prime Minister coming more often is really a pity. The attendance at Tokyo Racecourse on the day was 128,193 and the turnover of was 48 billion yen, or about $400 million U.S., for that particular day."

The Summit

The Summit began thereafter, with representatives from each country reporting on the current state of horse racing in their countries and other topics of interest.

As the representatives from each country joined in with active questioning and discussions, the meeting was deemed highly significant and successful.

After the meeting, a very welcome dinner was held, attended by numerous other guests, including Mr. Masayuki Takahashi, President of the Japan Racing Association (JRA).

Mr. Raymond Rooney, Senior Steward of the Turf Club or Ireland delivered a thank you address on behalf of all visiting participants.

On the next day, the stage changed to the Nakayama Racetrack for the Japan Cup, the first time in its history that it was held at that venue.

The Summit members attended the Japan Cup Dirt on Saturday, November 23 and the Japan Cup on Sunday concluding the full schedule of the 9th Japan Cup Owners' Summit.
